March 12, 2016 | Stay in Softball Sponsors Free Clinic, to Begin Free Pitching Program
Stay in Softball sponsored a Free Softball clinic for recreational level players age 8-12 on March 12th at the Earn it Athletic Academy 1148 East 22nd Street Euclid, Ohio. The instructors for the clinic were coaches from the Valley Extreme Girls Fastpitch organization (Warren, Ohio). Stay in Softball players from various competitive travel softball organizations (including Valley Extreme, the Ohio Lady Lasers and the Ohio Outlaws) also assisted at the clinic. The purpose of the clinic was to assist recreational level players with proper technique for fundamental skills such as throwing, fielding and hitting.
Due to the outstanding instruction provided at our free clinics, they have been extremely popular and successful. Due to the quality of the clinics, we have been asked on numerous occasions to add pitching instruction to the clinics. However, as every good pitcher knows, pitching is not something you can learn in a day or just pick up when you want to. Being a pitcher involves consistent hard work and practice! A good pitching instructor is also very helpful! However, we also know how expensive pitching lessons can be and also how difficult it is to find a good pitching instructor. Therefore, we decided to try to help some beginning/younger pitchers this year by starting a Stay in Softball free pitching program. We are going to try the program in 3 locations this spring/summer. The program is for beginning level pitchers ages 8-10 years old (or for older beginning pitchers in inner city middle schools) with financial need.
We will be beginning the first pitching program in Akron/Tallmadge with pitching instructor Alanna Barker Overholt. Coach Overholt is the Manager of the Lady Lookouts softball program, owner of AB Pitching and coach of the 12u Lady Lookouts team. She pitched in high school for Akron Springfield: record of 93-3 and a .39 ERA, All State '93,94, and '95; current top 10 Ohio State Records: Most Wins, Season (2nd), Most Career Wins (5th); Season Shutouts (10th). Alanna also pitched in college for Ohio University and served as pitching coach at Muskingum University.
The SIS Pitching Program starts with two free clinics coached by Coach Overholt; one on March 12 from 10-12 and one on March 19th from 10-12. SIS players will assist Coach Overholt. After the two clinics, there to be a series of group lessons with Coach Overholt.
In order to get the players who have the best chance of having the support they need to keep pitching, we have come up with a some eligibility "rules" for the clinics.
They are: 1. Players must commit to attending both clinics. 2. A parent (or coach) must accompany the player(s) to both clinics so that the parent/coach can also learn what the pitcher is learning. 3. The player and parent /coach must agree to practice in between the two clinics and thereafter. 5. After both clinics, in order to continue with the SIS program, players must show a commitment to practicing and attending the group lessons.
We hope that this program will enable beginning pitchers to learn the fundamentals of pitching with an outstanding pitching coach and to attend regular pitching lessons to keep them on track. We will be taking a maximum of 8 girls in each location on a first come/first serve basis. For more information or to enroll, please e mail us at [email protected]
